The die is cast, war drum pierced, storm calmed and the clash of the titans ended abruptly. The position of the People Democratic Party (PDP) after the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court can be likened to this illustration. Hitherto, the two factions in the PDP led by Senator Ahmed Ali Modu Sherrif and Senator Markafi had stalled peace advancement and sanity within the rank and file of the once dominant party in Nigeria.

imagesDespite the media trial, intimidation and harassment, the Abeokuta High Court has thrown out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)'s suit against former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. AKINJIDE AKINTOLA reports the undercurrents of the case. ________________________________________ It has become increasingly clear, indeed, almost on a daily basis that the courts in the land have become the last hope of the Nigerian people. This appears more poignant when one puts into proper perspective, last Friday's judgment of the High Court of Justice in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), against former Governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. The EFCC had in October last year created a media hype and trial of the former governor that sought to present to an undiscerning mind that the ex-governor was already guilty even before the real trial took off in the law court. On Thursday, October 6, 2011, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) invited and detained the former over allegations that he misappropriated the sum of #58.5 billion while in office. This amount was widely celebrated as it was the single largest among the two other former governors included in the list then. The impression created by the EFCC was that the allegations have been investigated and the charges against Daniel were ready and he would be prosecuted immediately. However, this was not the case as it took the nation's anti-graft agency one whole week to file the charges, while the man languished in EFCC cell against all known practices which presumed an accused innocent until proved otherwise.
