EFCC Act needs more than cosmetic amendment
By the time you read this, a member of the House of Representatives from Cross River State, Mr Bassey Ewa must be feeling extra funky with himself, waxing lofty on account of the bill he sponsored which has enjoyed tremendous media mileage. The Bill which is seeking to amend the EFFC Act 2004 is receiving the applause of the Honourable members and is making tremendous legislative progress.
EFCC’s sloppy investigations
I am sure Mr Bassey Ekwa, member House of Representatives from Cross River state has no axe to grind with the EFCC beyond ensuring efficient justice administration in Nigeria. He is the sponsor of a bill that seeks to amend the EFCC Act to prescribe that the agency be headed by a serving or retired judge. Members of the House in debating the bill agreed that the EFCC was not very successful in its prosecutions because it lacked in depth investigations. They blamed this on the absence of an investigation unit in the agency.
