My Background – The Journey of Excellence
Tracing the Life and Legacy of Otunba Gbenga Daniel: From Humble Beginnings to National Prominence
The Daniel story, which now reverberates throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria and beyond, began in the ancient city of Ibadan. Born on 6th April 1956 into the family of the Most Reverend Adebola Daniel of Makun, Sagamu, and the late Madam Olaitan Daniel of Omu-Ijebu, Otunba Daniel’s leadership traits were evident early in his life. While at Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, which he attended from 1969 to 1973, he represented the school in debates and quiz competitions. This earned him significant popularity among his peers and fostered his inclination toward intellectual pursuits.
After high school, he proceeded to the School of Basic Studies at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, for his A-Levels. Subsequently, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Lagos, where he won several laurels and developed a close association with the legendary Prof. Ayodele Awojobi. During his undergraduate years, he became a member of the Committee of Friends of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, being the youngest member of this group, which later evolved into the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).
During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year at the School of Engineering, Lagos State Polytechnic, Otunba Daniel made notable contributions. He supervised the construction of the Engineering Complex and conducted semester examinations for the School of Engineering without any leakage or scandal. This feat was commended by the institution’s management as “remarkable,” particularly in an environment where examination fraud was prevalent.
